The School of Vocational Studies aims at providing education and training for skills development and to meet the vocational as well as technical requirements for economic development of the country. Demand driven and value added courses/programmes offered through the School, targeting the formal and informal sectors. The School will develop courses that encourage vertical mobility of Vocational Education and Training. Research is another priority area for identifying societal and industrial needs.

B.Voc is a three year degree course after Higher Secondary with multiple entry and exit points. Students completing the first year get a Diploma certificate, after second year they get the Advanced Diploma certificate and after completion of three years, the B.Voc. Degree is awarded. The course curriculum has 40% general education (theory) and 60% vocational training (practical) components. These programs follow semester system and offer credits after completion of the course. The students who have enrolled in B.Voc courses appreciate the practical focus and are confident that their chances of getting a suitable job are higher than other graduates. These courses are expected to comply with NSQF and UGC (University Grant Commission).

The UGC has launched a scheme on skills development based higher education as part of University education, leading to two years Masters of Vocation (M.Voc.) degree with multiple exit options at Diploma/Advanced Diploma level under the NSQF. The M.Voc. programme is focused on Universities providing Post Graduate studies which would also incorporate specific job roles and their National Occupational Standards(NOS) along with broad based general education. This would enable the graduates completing M.Voc. to make a meaningful participation in accelerating India’s economy by gaining appropriate employment, becoming entrepreneurs and creating appropriate knowledge. After completing M.Voc. program, candidates will be able to find a decent job in that particular industry/sector/domain. The main aim of this course is to develop industry-specific skills among students. Through skill development, this program is empowering students and helping them.

Objectives

The main objectives of this scheme are given below:

To provide judicious mix of skills relating to a profession and appropriate content of general education.
To ensure that the students have adequate knowledge and skills, so that they are work ready at each exit point of the programme.
To provide flexibility to students by means of pre-defined entry and multiple exit points.
To integrate NSQF within the undergraduate level of higher education in order to enhance employability of the graduates and meet industry requirements. Such graduates apart from meeting the needs of local and national industry are also expected to be equipped to become part of the global workforce.
To provide vertical mobility to students coming out of (a) 10+2 with vocational subjects; and (b)Community Colleges.

Importance of B.Voc and M.Voc Program:

Our government has launched a unique scheme of “Skill India”. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana or PMKVY is the flagship programme of the Govt. of India, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) that enables Indian youth to indulge in skill-related or industry-related training which will be beneficial for them. It provides short term training to the youth. Therefore, acquiring skills through learning is a significant aspect of today’s education scenario.

Levels of Awards

The certification levels will lead to Diploma /Advanced Diploma/B. Voc./M.Voc. Degree in one or more vocational areas and will be offered under the aegis of the University. This is out-lined in Table 1.

Job Prospects and Outcomes

Vocational courses are an educational discipline that enables individual to acquire skills that are required for a particular trade. Bachelor of Vocational (B.Voc.) is a full- fledged Degree program approved by Universities Grants Commission (UGC) and recognized by Universities all over India and abroad. With a B.Voc Degree in a particular skill set, one can apply for specific skill based Visa rather than general work permit for foreign immigration. Closer home, it also means that B.Voc has all the privileges another Degree holder (BA, B.Com, B.Sc., or B.E.) enjoys, like going for Post-Graduation, taking UPSC, Bank, Railways exam etc., where basic Degree is a requirement. The B.Voc course focuses 60% on skill development and 40% on theoretical knowledge to help the student to acquire all the skills required for the domain and prepare them for the job market or entrepreneurial role. The course curriculum is so structured that students will able to get a job opportunity at the end of each year.

Bridging the gap between industry and academia is a major challenge in this country and bridging this gap is possible only by intense industry-academia interaction, training the youth with the tools and technologies of Industry and creating a mind-set of innovation and entrepreneurship. In today’s world Vocational Courses are the most important and powerful tool for youth from under-served sections of society. Vocational Education can provide necessary knowledge, skills and values that allow a person to become a high-income earner as well as human being with ethical values.

Our curriculum has provision for internship and project-based learning at the end of each semester which focuses on skill development, entrepreneurship and innovation and creating industry-ready professionals are the unique features of the University. We have collaboration with many industries around the country and keep ourselves engaged with them to evolve our curriculum as per industry requirements. Our aim is to produce future-ready professionals who can start working productively from the instant they join the industry.
